VAT registration: when you need to and how to choose a scheme
10 February 2026 · 5 min read
VAT registration becomes compulsory once your taxable turnover crosses the current threshold, but many businesses register voluntarily earlier — and the scheme you choose affects both admin and cash flow.
Compulsory vs voluntary registration
You must register once your rolling 12-month taxable turnover exceeds the threshold, but registering earlier can make sense if you mostly sell to VAT-registered businesses that can reclaim the VAT you charge.
Standard vs flat rate vs cash accounting
The standard scheme reclaims VAT on purchases directly; the flat rate scheme simplifies reporting using a fixed percentage of turnover but restricts reclaiming input VAT; cash accounting bases VAT on payments received and made rather than invoice dates, which helps cash flow.
Which suits your business
The right scheme depends on your margins, how much you spend on VAT-able purchases, and how promptly your customers pay — there's no single correct choice for every business type.
