Common bookkeeping mistakes small businesses make (and how to avoid them)
10 February 2026 · 5 min read
Most bookkeeping problems we see aren't caused by complicated transactions — they're caused by small habits that compound over months. Here are the ones that come up most often.
Mixing personal and business spending
Using one account for both makes reconciliation slower and expenses harder to justify if HMRC ever asks. A dedicated business account, even for sole traders, pays for itself in time saved.
Leaving receipts until year-end
Batch-processing a year of receipts at once is where errors and missed expenses creep in. Logging transactions weekly, or using an app to photograph receipts as they happen, keeps things accurate.
Not reconciling bank feeds regularly
An unreconciled bank feed hides problems — duplicate payments, missed income, or categorisation errors — until they've built up significantly.
Our advice
Most of these issues are prevented by a simple monthly rhythm rather than more complex software. We set that rhythm up for clients as part of our bookkeeping service, so it happens whether or not you remember to think about it.
