Claiming for tools, van and equipment as a tradesperson
10 February 2026 · 5 min read
Tools, vans and equipment are often a tradesperson's biggest costs outside of materials, and claiming them correctly makes a real difference to your tax bill.
Tools and small equipment
Hand tools and smaller equipment used wholly for your trade are generally allowable expenses, whether bought outright or on finance.
Vehicles
A van used for business is usually more straightforwardly claimable than a car, which often needs a private-use adjustment. Capital allowances or simplified mileage rates may apply depending on your setup.
Bigger purchases and capital allowances
Larger equipment purchases may be claimed through capital allowances, including annual investment allowance provisions that let you deduct the full cost in the year of purchase, up to certain limits.
Our advice
The right claiming method depends on how the asset is used and financed — we review this as part of your annual accounts so you're not leaving legitimate claims unclaimed.
